Project Description

shailendra singh negiOur guest teacher, Shailendra Singh Negi, was born in Rishikesh, India, on the banks of the holy river Ganga at the foot of the Himalayas.

Although Shailendra progressed through the modern education system and completed a University degree in Accounting, it was not long before he moved away from his profession to follow his passion for a yogic life.

The foundation for his unique style was acquired at the Shivananda Ashram. After earning diplomas at the Parmath Yoga Naturopathic Centre and the Gurukul University in Haridwar he established the Vedic Yoga Centre in Laxman Jula, Rishikesh and began his true calling as a teacher. His qualifications include classical yoga therapy, yoga philosophy, nutrition, naturopathy and Ayurveda therapy.

Shailendra’s passion is his desire for students to experience rather than simply study yoga. He does not set out to impress; his aim is to pass on the ways in which genuine seekers of peace and tranquillity can achieve this much-sought after goal, through determination and dedicated practice. The content of his spontaneous philosophy classes cannot be read in books as his teachings are integrated from his own personal experience and communing with sages whose knowledge has been passed down through generations from the traditional Vedic scriptures.

Shailendra does not practice or teach one specific style of yoga; rather, he focuses on the traditional practice of Vedic yoga which encompasses a wholistic approach, combining the many different aspects of yoga, all of which aim to help students achieve the capacity to attain stillness and peace. His main focus in his teaching is the methodology of making us aware of our inner spiritual roots and how to reach them. Shailendra infuses deep meaning into each of his practices:

  • Asana (movements and postures)
  • Pranayama (breathing techniques)
  • Kriya (yoga practice through movement to gain awareness of the inner life force)
  • Meditation
  • Ayurvedic therapy
  • Chanting (mantra)

Shailendra teaches that while these practices may work in different ways, the purpose of each one is the same – to help us awaken our inner consciousness and attain stillness so that we can live mindfully, in the moment, and attune ourselves to our inner world. Shailendra’s teachings are also devotionally oriented, educating us in learning how to serve, love and surrender – three characteristics of a truly yogic lifestyle.
